The founders of a Lake District holiday lettings company have received their second finals nomination in the Cumbria Tourism Awards.
Niall Mellonie and Marta Pawlik, the creative forces behind Laik, have once again been recognised for their contribution to tourism and community support in this year's New Business Tourism category.
Laik originated from humble beginnings, starting with a luxury bell tent in a farmer's field.
The founders have since expanded the company into a provider of sustainable, high-quality holiday lets.
The name 'Laik' was inspired by the Northern English dialect word for play and leisure, reflecting the company's ethos of creating happy holiday memories.
An ethical approach to holiday lettings defines Laik's operations, helping drive local spend and support local businesses, instead of displacing residents.
The firm boasts an 83 per cent average year-round occupancy rate, a figure considerably higher than the Lake District average of 53 per cent.
Mr Mellonie reflected on the company's growth and expressed excitement at the sustained recognition.
He said: "The judges told us this is the first time any business has reached the finals in our category twice.
"We’d only officially launched Laik six months before the 2023 awards, so just being nominated was thrilling enough.
"While we still qualify as a new business- and indeed, still feel it- so much has happened in the last 12 months that we’re excited to share.
"Last year, for example, we were working out of our spare bedroom; this year, judges were able to visit our new office right on Windermere High Street!”
Various innovations and touches have been integrated into Laik's operations, like digital guidebooks for local attractions and Pure Lakes toiletries, all aimed at promoting and benefitting the Lakes' economy and community.
Ms Pawlik said: "I think the judges liked our fresh viewpoint and embracing of technology, like integrating AI to coordinate swift turnarounds across our growing portfolio.
"It’s great to see our category highlighting new and sustainable technologies among four other strong contenders, like Carnforth-based electric bike hire company Ease-e-Ride.
“In fact, we both worked for its founder, Mike Turner, at Zip World Windermere, as well as Laik working in partnership with many of the fantastic businesses, venues and suppliers across all the categories.
"So whatever the results, we’re looking forward to a great evening among friends!”
The awards ceremony will take place at Kendal's Castle Green Hotel on July 2.
