BARROW Raiders announced that Bill Burgess, who was part of the 1966/67 squad that went to Wembley, has died.
Raiders called Burgess 'one of the club's all-time greats.' he scored 179 tries in 222 games for Barrow in the 1960s before going to Salford. This puts him third in the club's all time try scorers list.
Internationally, he also played for England and Great Britain, and had a rugby union career with Furness RUFC and Fylde RUFC.
In the 1966-67 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, Burgess played in Barrow's 12-17 defeat by Featherstone Rovers.
A spokesperson from the club said: "Bill also served on the Board of Directors for a short period and always had a smile on this face and infectious enthusiasm. He was one of life's gentlemen and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
"Our thoughts go out to Bill's family and many friends."
