A fish and chip shop in Askam is hoping to puts its corner of Furness on the map.

Last month The Mail launched the 'Best Chippy 2024' award with readers subsequently nominating their favourites.

From this, the ten finalists have now been revealed with readers able to vote for their favourite by picking up copies of the newspaper until Saturday, June 15.

Each of the ten establishments will feature in their own article with a different one being highlighted each day as they vie to earn your support in the campaign.

In the competition, Askam is represented by Polly's Plaice, which has been serving a loyal and devoted customer base for a number of years from its spot on Duke Street.

Owner John Parrott has been conducting business in the region for 22 years now, meaning that he has the keys to a great fish supper locked down.

His skills with a fryer are evidenced by the vocal support that locals and visitors alike have been sharing over the past two decades.

One repeat customer wrote: "[It's the] best chippy around - we travel from Barrow to Askam to have our chippy tea and we only go to Polly's Plaice.

"The Irish curry is absolutely gorgeous, it's not like the usual chippy curry, to me it's sweeter and compliments the fish and chips so well - both the fish and chips are the nicest we've ever tasted."

Another commented: "One of the best places I have been to for fish and chips, I highly recommend this chip shop."

"Great chippy, best around Furness - massive fish and consistently good chips," a supporter added.

Polly's Plaice will not have to wait too much longer to discover whether it has been crowned the first winner of the 'Best Chippy' award.

The grand reveal will come in the week commencing June 24 so make sure you cast your vote in time.
