Two brothers who own a chippy in Ulverston are hoping to cap a first year in business with a new award.

Last month The Mail launched the 'Best Chippy 2024' award with readers subsequently nominating their favourites.

From this, the ten finalists have now been revealed with readers able to vote for their favourite by picking up copies of the newspaper until Saturday, June 15.

Each of the ten establishments will feature in their own article with a different one being highlighted each day as they vie to earn your support in the campaign.

The 'Best Chippy 2024' awards so far:

One of the competitors is Priory Plaice Fish and Chip Shop on Priory Road which is managed by Cem Oktem and his brother Cihan.

The pair have been in the industry for 16 years now, taking over Packet Bridge Fish and Chips in Bolton Le Sands in February 2008 and opening Westgate Fish and Chips in Morecambe in November 2019.

They took over Priory Plaice back in May 2023 with Cem having helped the previous owners originally set up the business.

He added: "I have been a trainer at the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) training school since 2017 and helped with the training when Priory Plaice first opened.

"I was also the assessor when Priory Plaice gained the NFFF Quality Award assessment."

Before its closure in 2022, the business was listed in Fry Magazine as one of the top 50 fish and chip takeaways in the UK - with the brothers now hoping to earn their own success through the 'Best Chippy 2024' award.

Over the past 13 months since opening the doors again, Cem and Cihan have been building upon their own expertise, replicating the menus that have made their other businesses a big hit.

They will now have to wait and see to find out if their efforts have proved fruitful. The winner of the 'Best Chippy 2024' award will be announced in the week commencing June 24.
