SEVEN train stations in South Cumbria have been found to be among the worst 100 in the country for average waiting times.

According to data collated from website ‘On Time Trains’, Oxenholme station is currently the 12th ‘lowest-performing station’ across the UK - ranking 2616th out of 2628 stations based on a punctuality and cancellation rate collected from public data.

With an average of 2,289 passengers per day, the website found that just 29 per cent of trains had arrived on time over the last six months.

The website, which ranks stations in England, Wales and Scotland from best to worst, found Arnside station is the 39th worst in the UK, with 81 per cent of services delayed or cancelled, albeit the majority of delays were between one and two minutes.

With an average of just 69 visitors per day, Kents Bank is ranked 2593rd on the list, with 20 per cent of trains either ten or more minutes late or cancelled.

Grange, Cark, Ulverston and Roose train stations make up the remaining stations in the worst 100 in the country finishing 2562nd, 2558th, 2537th and 2536th on the list.

A Northern Rail spokesperson said: “Recently, our performance and reliability have not been up to scratch and for that we are sorry.

“We are actively managing higher levels of staff sickness, and on Sundays, which rely on crews volunteering to work additional hours, we have seen a reduction in train crew making themselves available on parts of the network.

“In addition, the ongoing industrial relations issues have their own impact. We are working hard with our colleagues and other train operators to improve service reliability.”

Windermere and Kendal train stations were the two best-ranked station across the county finishing 733rd and 1099th.
