Four churches in Furness are looking to honour the fallen soldiers of D-Day this week with special services.

National commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings will take place around June 6, with Cumbria also getting involved in the landmark milestone.

D-Day Commemoration in Furness:

St James' Church on Blake Street in Barrow, Broughton's St Mary Magdalene's Church, St Mary’s parish church of Dalton, and Great Urswick's St Mary and St Michael churches will be ringing their bells as part of the day of remembrance.

St James' will ring the bells from 5:00pm to approximately 5:30pm, when St Mary Magdalene's will take over for roughly 30 minutes.

From 6:30pm, Dalton will hear the bells, with Great Urswick then benefitting from the performances at 7:00pm.

Andy Pollock, the tower captain at St James’ church in Barrow, said: "To be able to play even a small part in paying tribute is humbling and a great honour.

"Towers across the country will ring out to mark the occasion, to commemorate the debt our country, our liberty, values and way of life owes to those of all nations who embarked on the D-Day landings.

"And we hope those who hear the sound of the bells will spare a moment of contemplation and prayer."

These performances will serve alongside further local and national acts of commemoration.

In Barrow, a remembrance event will be held outside the town hall, beginning with a proclamation by the Town Crier at 10:00am.

Ulverston will see its newly elected mayor, Councillor Graham Scrogham, host the raising of a D-Day flag at the Sir John Barrow Monument.

And businesses in Dalton have already been decorated with 50 D-Day flags along Market Street and Tudor Square.

On a national scale, Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR, Pageant Master of D-Day 80, explained: “Beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace will be lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.

"However, at 9:10pm, as night descends - and just before the beacons ignite - the resonant sound of bagpipes will be heard across the capital cities of London, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff."
