ULVERSTON magician Jack Rhodes said he was 'buzzing' after finishing runner-up in Britain's Got Talent.

Sydnie Christmas, from Kent, was the winner of the show, receiving £250,000 and a spot at the Royal Variety Performance.

However Jack's career as a full-time magician and comedian, which only started in January, remains on the up as he will embark on a UK-wide tour later this year and he has built a significant following on social media.

Jack was told by head judge Simon Cowell he had a shot at winning after his performance, which involved the magician putting a 'lie-detector' bowler hat on him, much to the amusement of his fellow judges and the audience.

Jack started his show with a pyrotechnics display. He joked: "They've given me a budget can you tell? I'll be honest that's most of the budget gone."

He then asked judge Amanda Holden for one of her rings and put it in a cup held by Bruno Tonioli. Later, he revealed that the ring had transferred from the cup to the lightbulb in the hat, which had been worn by Simon for much of the show.

The former nuclear engineer cracked that he had stolen the lie-detecting hat 'back when I had a proper job.'

The hat lit up green or red depending on what the wearer said to indicate a truth or a lie. It lit up red when he said 'I'm not as daft as I look.'

"I can't believe that, that was absolutely brilliant," judge Alesha Dixon said. "You are so crafty - how did you do that? That's going to bug me for years."

"I'm telling you it's so smart, so original but above all what you have is an incredible natural charisma," Bruno said. "Stage presence - you really have star quality." He praised Jack for the way he 'controlled the room.'

Straight after Sydnie Christmas was revealed as the winner, Jack thanked his wife and everyone who voted for him.

Jack said after the show: "I'm overwhelmed, buzzing, everything in-between. The sense of relief now I've done it. I want to thank everyone that voted, this whole week's been absolutely amazing. I'm going to go lie down and probably never wake up."
