THE derailed unit that came off the track in Grange is still sitting in a yard in Ulverston months after the crash.

On March 22 the 5.18am train from Preston derailed on its approach to Grange. It closed the line for a month, and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch is currently examining why the train came off the track.

While some of the units that did not come off the track, one still remains in a sidings at Ulverston. There were reports from local train enthusiasts that the unit had been in the siding for so long seagulls had starting nesting on it, something which Northern denies.

A spokesperson for Northern said: "One of the units involved in the derailment at Grange-over-Sands remains in sidings at Ulverston due to damage to the undercarriage which means it cannot be moved to a TrainCare Centre on the track.

"Regular checks are carried out and there is no evidence of seagulls nesting at this time. When the unit is ready to be moved by a low-loader vehicle, further checks will take place.”

According to the website, the main TrainCare Centres in the region are at Allerton and Newton Heath.
