Ulverston's new mayor has hailed the news the town has been dubbed the 'UK's party capital'.

Councillor Graham Scrogham was elected on May 20  - less than week before the town was given the fun title.

It was named so by national news outlet The Mirror which referred to Ulverston's 'hip mix of cute pubs', as well as its many festivals.

A handful of independent businesses were also given a mention including some of its finest pubs such as The White Hart Inn, The Sun Inn and The Stan Laurel.

Unique drive-thru ice cream parlour Cumbrian Cow Ice Cream was also featured and was hailed as boosting Ulverston's "appeal to tourists as the temperatures start to climb."

The Mail: The title of 'party town' was given regarding the young people it attracts because of the eclectic mix of events.

Ulverston-born Graham Scrogham, who is also lightkeeper of Ulverston's iconic Sir John Barrow monument atop of Hoad Hill, has seen the town from many points of view in many different ways.

"I think the 'party' element comes from the fact that people are often dressed up at Ulverston events," said Cllr Scrogham.

"We have such a jam-packed schedule of festivals that a lot of the photos of Ulverston are people having a good time.

"Particularly with the likes of Another Fine Fest with its world record attempts, you see people with the paint powder and people in party hats.

The Mail: "There is also Dickensian Festival, an event which is known throughout the country, where people are also dressed up.

"What this really shows is that the people who have given up their time to organise these events have been successful in getting the town recognised.

"The events continue to grow from strength to strength and this year we had the first Festival of Light which was another fantastic event.

"The great independent businesses in and around Ulverston too, with some not even in the thick of the festivals, also get involved and welcome people.

"The town itself lends itself to such events as we can close parts of it without affecting the traffic too much.

"Away from the hustle and bustle, there are also plenty of tranquil areas such as the canal and Hoad Hill - so when visitors come here, they tend to get intrigued and want to explore a bit further."

"As the article said, Ulverston really is a really great mix."
