PERMISSION has been granted for a temporary recreational campsite in the Lake District.

Tim Green, a British Off Road Driving Association specialist trainer at Graythwaite Adventure, gave written notice to the Lake District Park Authority for the site to be open for use between Saturday, July 14 and Monday, September 2.

The site is on an elevated area on the shore of Windermere at Grubbins Point on the  Graythwaite Estate.

It will consist of eight pre-assembled bell tents and portable toilets.

The site is located within Flood Risk Zones 2 and 3 and prior approval was required as to the acceptability of the flood risk assessment and provisions for warning and evacuation.

A report by planning officers said: "The Environment Agency and Cumbria Fire and Rescue have been consulted. They have no objections to the application and their response indicates the proposals are consistent with the National Planning Policy Framework requirements to ensure development is made safe for its lifetime without increasing flood risk elsewhere. The submitted FRA and evacuation plan are considered acceptable.

"Having regard to the response of the Environment Agency and the provisions of the NPPF the submitted site-specific flood risk assessment, including provision for warning and evacuation, is considered to be acceptable and as such, prior approval is given."

A report by the Environment Agency said: "We are therefore satisfied that the proposed development would be safe and that it would not be at an unacceptable risk of flooding or exacerbate flood risk elsewhere.

"The applicant, as owners of the existing property, will be aware of the potential flood risk and frequency. The applicant should be satisfied that the impact of any flooding will not adversely affect their proposals."

New government regulations mean that landowners can apply for planning permission for a 60-day temporary recreational campsite. Previously, permission was only given for up to 28 days.

Between 2020-21, the government extended this to 56 days. However, from July 26 sites could accommodate up to 50 tents, motorhomes or campervans over a period of 60 days.

The application was submitted on March 13 and the Lake District Park Authority approved it on May 21.
