A seagull that was believed to have been shot in Ulverston has had to be put down because of its injuries.

The wounded bird was discovered by a man on Saturday (May 25) close to where he works at Ulverston tip.

He then contacted Bardsea Bird Sanctuary who took in the bird for treatment and discovered a bullet hole underneath the wing.

The seagull was put on antibiotics and painkillers and Elisabeth Ashleigh, who runs the bird rescue, had concerns about lead poisoning as she couldn't find an exit wound.

This meant the bullet was still lodged somewhere which would affect muscles and tendons.

She confirmed yesterday (May 28) however that after a visit to Church Walk Vets in Barrow, the decision was made to put the animal down.

Elisabeth said: "They made the decision to put the bird to sleep as a result of its suffering. I bawled my eyes out but it was in pain.

"We need to find out who is responsible for these recent shootings, not only of seagulls but of pigeons too."
