The football community in south Cumbria came together to remember a local manager.

Paul Cresswell died in September last year having spent a stint at Holker Old Boys during his managerial career.

On Saturday, May 25, the club organised a charity football match in his honour with the side taking on Hawcoat Park FC to raise as much money as possible.

The funds that came in went directly to St Mary's Hospice, the charity which cared for Paul towards the end of his life.

A spokesperson from the hospice said: "A huge St Mary's thank you to Lynne and her sons, James and Reece, as this match was raised in memory of Lynne's husband, Paul.

"The turnout was amazing with friends, families, and football fanatics coming together to raise funds."

Besides those involved in the football side of things, businesses also got involved to pay tribute to Paul and help boost the donations brought in.

The hospice added: "A big shout out to all the local businesses that donated raffle prizes including Barrow Central Joinery, Dalton Tool Hire, Irv's Resto's, Review Hairdressers, Salvanas, The Ambrose, Alpha Construction, Park Leisure Centre, Cheryl Davey and Zest.

"Thank you also to The Chippy Van for their contribution - we cant wait to find out the total amount raised."

The afternoon of footballing entertainment took place at the Handmark Engineering Stadium on Rakesmoor Lane, with the entry price of £5 going towards the hospice.

"Paul received wonderful care whilst he was a patient at St Mary's," Lynne explained.

"All proceeds from the game will go to this wonderful local charity."

Back in September, his former club paid their first tribute to Paul, with a minute's applause being done by all three senior teams.

A spokesperson from Holker Old Boys commented: "He was a top bloke and respected by everybody that knew him."
