WORK is progressing on renovating Kirkby-in-Furness's Community Centre playground.

After years of planning, the local community is close to seeing their park restored and the facilities upgraded.

The previous playground facilities were more than 25 years old and required frequent maintenance work to keep them safe.

After successfully managing to raise enough money through grants from various charities and organisations, construction at the village park was able to begin.

On Wednesday February 14, the Community Centre Committee were finally able to order new playground equipment.

Several months later, builders were on site and work began on Monday April 29, and could finish at the end of this month.

The project has received money from Kirkby Moor Wind Farm, CGP, FCC, Sir John Fisher Foundation, Parish Council- Community Infrastructure Levy, Kirkby Charities, and the community centre has also contributed.

Ceri Anne Laisby started working on the project around May 2022 and spent a lot of time looking at funding options, collecting quotes and designs for the project.

The plan includes a swing set, an inclusive roundabout, a climbing frame with a slide and a hut for children to sit down in.

Ceri said: “Completion is looking like the end of May, maybe the beginning of June. The costs are around £85,000.

“The project is progressing well, and equipment installation should start next week.”

The Community Centre Committee plans to have an opening event once work is complete, where villagers and fundraisers will be invited to come and see the new playground.
