PLANS to build new industrial units in Ulverston have been given the green light.

Westmorland and Furness Council have approved proposals from Luscombe Plant Hire to build five industrial units on the Elms off North Lonsdale Road in Ulverston.

A design and access statement submitted by the applicant states: “The existing use is Industrial, generally storage of construction plant machinery with a workshop.

“The site would not be suitable for any other use due to the flood risk therefore further development of industrial use is considered most appropriate.”

Planning documents state the size and scale of the proposed industrial units will be similar to those nearby on the industrial estate and each unit will have a floor area of 484 square metres.

The design and access statement adds: “The materials have been carefully selected and will comprise of Olive Green cladding, natural render lower walls and a Conifer Green roof. Natural colours which will reflect any nearby greenery, like that to the south and east of the site.”

However, Ulverston Town Council object to the plans and say the proposals increase the risk of flooding to neighbouring properties.

The Environment Agency state: “We are satisfied that the development would be safe without exacerbating flood risk elsewhere if the proposed flood risk mitigation measures are implemented.”

A report by planning officers concludes: “The proposed development is acceptable in principle and will have an acceptable impact on neighbour amenity, contamination, and flood risks subject to the submission of further details.

"Conditions controlling hours of operation, the installation of external lighting, biodiversity net gain, and the parking and turning areas have been imposed.”

Westmorland and Furness Council approved the application on May 8.
