The 'hardest' bike ride in the UK was just another day at the office for one mountain rescue team.

The 'Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge' took place over the weekend, with the 112 mile route starting at Grasmere before climbing up Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose and Blea Tarn.

The event required 33 volunteers from the Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team to stand guard throughout the course.

A spokesperson from the MRT said: "[We brought] the medical training and specialist equipment needed to help keep riders safe as they tackled some of the steepest and most winding roads the Lake District has to offer.

"It was another brilliant day and, as always, we are sending a huge well done to all participants in this epic event - it’s not your average bike ride!"
