A SANDWICH shop specialising in Mediterranean cuisine has opened in Barrow town centre.
The highly anticipated Dodona Sandwich Bar welcomed its first customers through the door on Tuesday March 19.
The 'daytime version of Dodona restaurant' incorporates some of the tried and tested dishes they serve of an evening - as well as some new ideas.
There is lots to choose from including authentic Greek gyros bowls, hot wraps and filled pittas, Italian sandwiches made with real beef and prosciutto, as well as vegetarian Albanian options.
Most of the products and ingredients, such as authentic Italian meats and unique Greek drinks, are imported from their original sources abroad.
You can try traditional Mediterranean desserts such as Baklava and Kataifi plus Italian cakes like Quadriofoglio and classic tiramisu.
Alongside hot drinks and coffees they also sell a range of real fruit Greek and Italian cherry, peach, pear and orange flavoured drinks. For opening week only, a hot drink comes free with your meal.
The new premises, on Dalton Road, will be open seven days a week between 8am and 5pm, offering spaces to sit inside as well as outdoors with the option to takeaway.
Horizont Pllana, the owner of both Dodona restaurant and sandwich bar, said everyone was ‘very excited’ for the opening as they embarked on a ‘busy’ first day of trade.
After taking over a derelict high street building, every effort has been put in to transform the space with a sleek, modern interior.
Mr Pllana said the first customer of the day remarked on how nice it was to see the space being used and how appealing it looks after a makeover.
The sandwich bar aims to fill a gap in the market by offering good quality, tasty food and warm lunch options during the day.
Mr Pllana said: “Many people who want a sandwich for lunch will have to go to Tesco or a supermarket where they do quick sandwiches.”
The idea to open their own place and serve food during the day came from a customer who pitched how successful some of the restaurant dishes and popular gyros would prove around lunchtime.
When asked about his favourite dish, Mr Pllana said: “I love them all, we try everything and if it’s not our favourite, it doesn’t make it onto the menu.
“The place is looking good, there are great times ahead. We have started simple but will build up, there are plenty of ideas to introduce going forwards. I project a positive future.”
