The University of Cumbria has submitted an amendment to a planning application for a new campus in Barrow.
The university wants to change conditions related to the approved plans for a campus next to BAE Systems’ Academy of Skills and Knowledge.
Planning documents submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council said the university wishes to extend the timeframe for submission of a full scheme of works for the footway provision, cycling lane and link provision, street lighting and landscaping from 12 months to 15 months of the decision date.
Previously plans to build the campus were approved in March 2023 and in November members of the cabinet for Westmorland and Furness Council gave the green light for officers to finalise and enter into a grant funding agreement of £11.17 million with the University of Cumbria to develop the Barrow Island campus.
According to planning documents the university wishes to change the conditions due to a change in the lease agreement sign off from September 2023 to January 2024 and subsequent construction start date for the University development.
The statement says: “More time is now required to finalise and submit the full scheme of road upgrade works associated with planning conditions 19 and 29.
“This amendment does not impact the timescale for completion of the works required to satisfy the pre-occupation conditions to enable the university to become operational.”
The University of Cumbria campus on Barrow Island seeks to create more than 1,400 places for students by 2031 on land provided by BAE systems. It will open to its first students in January 2025.
Courses to be provided from the new campus include digital and cyber security, project management and logistics/supply chain management.
Brilliant Barrow Board member and University of Cumbria Vice Chancellor, Professor Julie Mennell previously said: “This is a campus that will offer innovative, inclusive facilities and provision for a wide range of people, helping to transform lives and the communities in which people live.”
The amendment to the planning application was submitted on February 27.
