South Walney Infant and Nursery School (SWINS) has made the decision to apply to become a member of the South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust (SCMAT).

This decision was unanimously voted for by the school's governors, who have resolved to academise with SCMAT, which already has six member schools across Barrow.

Headteacher of SWINS, Becs Ensoll said: "Our staff and pupils will benefit from the enhanced expertise that being part of a bigger organisation will bring.

“The Trust was formed with a vision that fits well with our own ethos of challenging and nurturing our children to become confident lifelong learners.

“It will also enable us to formalise our excellent working relationship with South Walney Junior School to continue a seamless transition as pupils progress through their education.”

The Trust began in 2021 with 'education at its heart'.

Members of the Trust are Chetwynde, Ormsgill, Vickerstown, South Walney Juniors, Cambridge Primary and Newbarns Primary and Nursery School.

According to Professor Andrew Wren, SCMAT chief executive, the Trust has been in talks with several other schools who are keen to join this year.

He said: “We are delighted South Walney Infant and Nursery School have moved to join our Trust. We have met the staff and governors and were impressed by their diligence and commitment to further improving their fantastic school by working together.

“It is testament to the work we are doing to drive up standards in education that other schools want to come on board.”

A public consultation, open to queries about the Trust, is scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, 5pm to 6pm, at South Walney Infant and Nursery School.

Another public consultation will be held at Victoria Infant and Nursery School on Thursday, February 8, 5pm, in line with its formal application to join SCMAT. The school is currently an associate member.
