BARROW Sea Cadets have been honoured with a national award.

The TS Sovereign section won the Indefatigable Cup after being recognised as the ‘Most Improved Unit’ in the country in 2023 from over 430 Sea Cadets Units nationwide.

The award recognises Barrow Sea Cadets’ fantastic achievements last year which included over 85 hours of afloat training per cadet, sailing the coast of the United Kingdom on Tall Ships and Power Vessels, as well as a week-long annual camp to Weymouth.

The group, which has been part of the Furness community for over 90 years, was also recognised for finishing third place in the national rowing competition and for there support to events such as the Soapbox derby and welcoming The Princess Royal to Barrow.

Niyall Phillips, officer in charge of the TS Sovereign Unit, said: “2023 was a fantastic year. We are aiming to do the same again and more in 2024.

“To achieve the recognition and award is absolutely amazing. The entire unit is extremely proud of what we achieved together last year.

“This award is recognition of the dedication and professionalism of our volunteer team both uniformed and trustees, the support we receive from parents, and above all, the sheer effort, commitment and excellence of our wonderful cadets.”

The Unit is always looking to welcome new members.

There are three sections within the Barrow unit at the Dundee Street Headquarters – ‘Junior Sea Cadets’ aged between 10 to 12, ‘Sea Cadets’ who are aged between 12-18 and ‘Royal Marine Cadets’ who are aged between 13-18.

The unit offers young people a variety of training experiences including the opportunity to sail around the coast of the UK, gain BTEC qualifications, learn how to row and gain key life skills.
