FRIENDS of a schoolboy who died in a ‘tragic’ accident are honouring his memory – more than ten years after his death.

Edward Gabbert was 15 years old when he died at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on November 22, 2013.

An inquest heard he suffered a single gunshot wound to the head in an accident when he was helping to hunt foxes on his family farm at Ulpha in the Duddon Valley.

Now Broughton Young Farmers Club is completing a charity car pull in his memory.

The car pull is being organised by five close friends who met at the Young Farmers Club.

Bradley Troughton, Neil Fell, Jonny Woodhouse, Jack Shephard and Daniel Leighton went to school and were close friends with ‘Eddie’.

On Sunday February 18 around 40 members of Broughton YFC will take turns pulling the car 17.3 miles.

In preparation for the challenge, a four-by-four Toyota RAV4 has been modified by cutting down the back and making a frame for members to push, as well as adding ropes and bars to pull.

The route will start from Millom School at 9am and make its way to Broughton Square via the Ulpha Valley.

Bradley Troughton said: “We chose this route as it starts at the school Eddie attended and passes up over Ulpha valley where he lived and grew up, then finishes in Broughton where he attended primary school and the Young Farmers club.”

All of the money raised will be donated to Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue to help towards the building of their new base.

Bradley explained that the charity is close to home and is the perfect choice for Broughton YFC as many members work in harsh conditions on the fells.

The route was also chosen because of its harsh climbs and longevity to reflect the efforts that that mountain rescues put in on their callouts.

Although Broughton YFC normally tries and do a charity event every year in memory of Eddie, everything stopped due to the pandemic.  This will be the first event in roughly five years and will take place two days after Eddie’s birthday.

“We are hoping to raise £5,000,” Bradley said. “If we achieve this, we will be very proud and grateful to all the sponsors and public who donated.”

The car will be covered in sponsors' logos, kindly donated by Outlines Graphics. Broughton YFC is hoping for 70 sponsors altogether and asks if anyone wishes to donate, please contact a member of Broughton Young Farmers.
