For the first time since the onset of Covid-19 restrictions, Barrow Park's glasshouse has unveiled its much-anticipated Christmas display.

Westmorland and Furness Council's Parks Team have adorned the heated greenhouse with four Christmas trees, scarlet poinsettias, garlands and fairy lights.

The show glasshouse, situated within the 45-acre park designed by Thomas Mawson, is known for its year-round floral displays.

However, this is the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic that it has staged a yuletide display.

Councillor Virginia Taylor, the council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said: “Anybody looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the countdown to Christmas can discover an oasis of peace at Barrow Park.

“Our talented and creative Parks Team have created a beautiful display that captures the colours of Christmas. Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer even puts in an appearance.

"I hope lots of people will take the opportunity to visit the glasshouse over the next couple of weeks and enjoy some quiet moments among all the busy-ness of the festive season.”

The display is the 'icing on the cake' after a 'wonderful year of horticulture'.

Cllr Taylor added: “This Christmas display is the icing on the cake of a wonderful year for horticulture in Barrow, after winning a silver award at this year’s Cumbria in Bloom for Pride in Your Community.

"Part of the award-winning entry was an avenue of 15 flowering cherry trees at Barrow Park and this will give us all something to look forward to in spring when the blossom is out.

“Well done to everyone who works so hard to keep our town looking attractive all year round.”

Accessible from Abbey Road, Park Drive, Park Avenue, and Greengate Street in Barrow, the park offers a serene location for a stroll throughout the year.

The glasshouse's daily operating hours are from 10am to 5pm, with closure only on Christmas Day.
