THE mayor of Ulverston has praised the volunteers who helped deliver a 'record-breaking' Dickensian Festival.
Michelle Scrogham said: “The organisers are very tired. People are always surprised to hear that we're a tiny team of unpaid volunteers but to be able to deliver such a huge success and see so many people enjoying the weekend, along with the boost of millions of pounds to our local economy is really satisfying.
“We had a record number of visitors this year and messages have been flooding in saying it was the best ever. Hearing visitors say it's the best Christmas Market they've ever attended is wonderful, particularly when the majority of stallholders and entertainers are from within 30 miles of Ulverston.
“Once the smell of chestnuts hits you with the sound of a brass band, its instantly Christmas, and I hope everyone found some great gifts and treats, enjoyed the entertainment and will be back again in 2024."
This year saw the number of local stalls increase to 70 per cent of all traders present over the weekend.
