GREEN BINS in some South Lakeland areas haven't been collected for the second time in a row this week prompting an additional service.

Bins were missed on Monday (October 30) around High Newton, Field Broughton, parts of Cartmel and Meadowbank Lane in Grange.

The extra service was added yesterday (Thursday 2 November).

Facebook users also reported that their green bins were missed in Flookburgh, Allithwaite, Crook and Oxen Park and are still awaiting collection.

A Westmorland and Furness Council spokesperson said: "Occasionally waste and recycling collection rounds may not be completed, or in exceptional circumstances could be cancelled, due to unforeseen circumstances.

"Reasons for non-completions or cancellations can include being unable to access a street due to roadworks or parked cars, vehicle breakdown or unusual levels of staff sickness.

"In circumstances when our available resources are diminished and we may be forced to cancel rounds, we will always look to prioritise statutory collections, i.e. those collections that we are required to make, which are general waste and dry recyclables.

The local authority states that green waste is a non-statutory service. In areas of Westmorland and Furness where there is no additional charge for green waste, this means there is pressure on available resources, therefore teams may look to reorganise rounds on any given day to ensure the statutory collections are protected.

This may mean diverting vehicles or crews away from a scheduled green round to supplement the statutory collections and the subsequent cancellation or non-completion of that green round.

A spokesperson added: "We recognise that this is frustrating if your round is affected. Every effort is made to ensure that the same green rounds are not continually impacted - so if your green round is cancelled one week then the next time it is necessary to look at cancelling a green round the team will try to ensure your round isn’t one of those impacted.

"We try to treat all areas fairly in these circumstances and if your green collection is missed we will do our very best to ensure it resumes on the next scheduled collection day.

"If it has been necessary to cancel a green waste collection we advise householders to take their green bin back to its usual storage point and to re-present it on the next scheduled collection day. We would not ordinarily return the following day/days to pick-up any missed green waste.

"However, we had an issue recently in a limited number of areas of South Lakeland where consecutive green collections had been missed, so it was decided to arrange for an additional collection for those areas this week to clear that backlog.

"It is still rare for any scheduled collections to be cancelled and we currently complete 98% of our waste and recycling collections on the scheduled collection day."
