A MOTORIST caught drink driving by police on the A590 said he would lose his job after receiving a driving ban.

South Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard Daniel Calvert was found in his car in a layby by police after concerns were raised about his driving.

He had been travelling on the road towards Greater Manchester but stopped to have a rest having not realised he would be over the limit, magistrates were told.

The 37-year-old engineer said he would be losing his job 'tomorrow' after the conviction and needed his driving licence.

He admitted a charge of drink driving when he appeared before magistrates.

Prosecutor Peter Kelly described how police caught up with the defendant near Haverthwaite after members of the public reported concerns about the manner of his driving.

He said: "The circumstances are at around 2pm on September 17 PC Varty was tasked with locating this vehicle on the A590.

"There had been reports of some concern about the driving.

"The defendant was interviewed and confirmed that he did drive the vehicle and was travelling to Greater Manchester but stopped to have a rest."

The defendant was asked to provide a roadside test that proved to be positive.

He was found to have had 45 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, over the legal limit of 35.

Representing the defendant in court, Leah Kirk said: "Mr Calvert tells me he had been out drinking the previous evening.

"He felt OK to drive.

"When he got into his car he pulled over to have a rest.

"He's been cooperative. He had no knowledge he had been over the limit or he wouldn't have got into the car at the time."

Ms Kirk said Calvert needed his licence for his job and expected to be sacked as a result of the conviction.

Magistrates fined Calvert, of How Lea Drive in Bury, £364 for the offence.

The defendant was also banned from driving for 12 months and told to pay a victim surcharge of £146 and prosecution costs of £85.

He said he wanted to complete a drink drivers' rehabilitation course, which would shorten his ban.
