Barrow will soon be gaining a local Farmers and Producers Market, with stalls popping up in town on Friday October 6.

The Manager of Barrow Market, Jacqui Armstrong is excited to join forces with Mawbray Cheese Company and bring local producers together.

Mawbray Cheese previously traded at Barrow Market and was a “very popular business” with customers and indoor traders. Jacqui said their home-made cheeses and cheesecakes “are delicious!”

Founded by Adrian McGreavy and based in Maryport, the small, artisan business makes over 20 varieties of cheese by hand using locally sourced milk from Jersey Cows as well as a range of Goat Milk products.

Janet McGreavy has been a driving force behind many outdoor markets in the local area and has years of experience organising events, since trading in Barrow before Covid, the couple have been keen to come back and invite other traders.

Jacqui said the idea had a “very positive response” from Barrow’s traders, including The Milk Hut, Coffee D’Ash, McMunchies, Flicker – Handmade by Lisa, Goodness Gracious Gifts, Marie’s Handknits and L & K Trading.

Regular pitches will be joined by Mawbray Cheese and Christine Kitchen, who makes homemade Cakes, Jams and Chutneys and David’s Handmade Bath bombs.

The lineup now includes between 12 and 15 stalls, offering cheese, chutney, jams, tray bakes, sweet loaves, honey, brownies, bath bombs, wax melts, candles, soap, pottery, knits, milk, coffee and much more.

“There is a proven demand in our town for themed markets and we have over 30 independent businesses located in Barrow Market Hall.  We would like to invite the public to come along and enjoy a great day of local shopping at Barrow Markets.  Our success is completely dependent on our local community’s support and the more successful they are, we will be able to offer more local shopping experiences.”

Hopefully, the new farmers market will be something that continues, Janet said they are planning to have a Farmers Market on the first Friday of each month.

The market is still open for bookings and would welcome fresh produce and locally made food businesses to contact: markets1@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk.
