PLANS to demolish a building at Barrow's shipyard have been approved as development continues at the site.
Proposals were put forward to flatten BAE's C42 building off Bridge Road and remove existing cabins.
In its place will be three Portakabins, according to plans.
The proposal has now been approved by Westmorland and Furness Council.
A statement submitted to the council with the plans said: "The proposal is to demolish the existing C42 building and remove the existing cabins (RTS3 and RST4).
"Three Portakabins will then be installed within the yard.
"Two will be positioned on the existing concrete slab of the demolished C42 building with the third Portakabin installed on the opposite side of the site parallel to building C25.
"The existing slab of the demolished building will need to be extended slightly to accommodate the new Portakabins with some other minor external alterations to allow drainage connections and improve pedestrian access."
Spelling out the proposed work and the materials that will be used, it said: "Existing kerbs will be removed, and the access road widened, with new areas of tarmac.
"Painted road markings and dedicated pedestrian crossing point will be added to the widened road. The Portakabins are manufactured and prefabricated at Portakabin.
"The external walls are durable one-piece construction with high performance, low maintenance galvanised steel cladding to offer protection against fire, extreme weather, and accidental damage.
"The roof deck is a single one-piece construction and is impact resistant. The prefabricated nature results in minimal impact on the environment and provides a flexible solution.
"It allows BAE systems to begin using the specifically fitted units more quickly than traditional build and can be removed from site with little impact."
During the construction phase a temporary welfare cabin and site office cabin will be installed near the site, plans say.
Several construction projects are underway or in the works at the shipyard as part of BAE's Site Regeneration Programme.
BAE has been engaging with residents on Barrow Island to keep them informed of upcoming projects.
