THE winners of a soapbox derby that took place in town during the weekend have been revealed.

On Saturday August 19 Barrow town centre was transformed into a race track for Barrow Soapbox Derby on Dalton Road.

Footfall monitors within the town centre record just over 30,000 visitors on the day.

The event, organised by Barrow BID and sponsored by BAE Systems, saw 13 teams launch themselves from the start ramp down through the 340m course to the finish line outside the Townhouse at the bottom of Dalton Road.

New to this year's event was the addition of new obstacles, including a splash zone, sponsored by GrimefightersUK, where competitors had to carefully negotiate to make it over the finish line in the fastest time possible.

Here is a list of all the award winners:

  • Overall Winner (1st): Coastline Brewery
  • 2nd Place: The Wet Rumours
  • 3rd Place: Love Barrow Families
  • Main Sponsors Choice Award: Youthability
  • Most Innovative Kart Design:  JJC-YA
  • Best Turned Out Soapbox Crew: BAT Systems
  • Joker of the Day: Furness Multicultural Forum

Barrow BID Chair Jenny Fazackerley said: "This year's Soapbox Derby was all about delivering a fun-filled family event that everyone could enjoy.

"As a BID, we made sure that entry costs were kept to an absolute minimum and that we enabled as many local charities and community organisations to benefit from the race.

"Nearly all elements of the event were undertaken by local companies ensuring as much money as possible was spent within the local economy.

"None of this would have been possible without the overwhelming support of our main sponsors, BAE Systems, as well as Orsted and all the other local town centre businesses who supported this event.

"A massive thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy this year's event and to all the competitors who took part."
