A historic pub that was taken over by a new owner has an official opening date.
The Vulcan pub on Duke Street in Askam had been closed for many years with its future largely uncertain.
In 2010 objections were raised about turning the building into flats which nonetheless never came to fruition. The property once saw life as the Goldmine pub and most recently was the Taste of India restaurant.
Local residents appeared to be delighted at the news that 33-year-old Harneet Singh Khaneja, who runs Askam post office, had taken over.
In recent months people have submitted old photos of the pub for him to display on the walls, with some dating back to the early 1900s.
One showed a World War Two soldier standing outside the pub during the 'big snow' of the 1940s. Others posted nostalgic pictures online of themselves and their family members partying in the pub in the 1980s and '90s.
"It's been closed for a long time and I'm excited and nervous to re-open, it's a lot of pressure," Harneet, known locally as Harry, said.
"We've put a lot of hard work in to refurbish, paint and decorate everything as it was left in a terrible way. For now we're just opening the front part and are taking it step by step.
"It may only seem small but we've done all the hardest stuff first and then it's time for the more fun stuff which will come later.
"If all goes we will open the back part and then the next step will be the kitchen and putting on food. We've always said we want to take feedback from the community about this so we want to see what they think first and take everything in stages.
"If they do like something - we'll do it, if they don't like something- won't do it. That's how it's gonna work.
"We can't wait for them to see the new bar with drinks the big TVs as there's a Chelsea game on on opening day. There's live music from 8.30pm and people can come play pool, darts and the new jukebox and enjoy themselves.
"I couldn't have done this without my team. Julia who works in the Post Office has put so much hard work in decorating, cleaning and tidying.
"A woman called Emma who has three kids has managed to sort out our Instagrammable flower wall which is amazing. It makes me happy to mention Liem too who also did the woodwork for our new bar.
"We did our bit and we're hoping the community supports us."
The Vulcan pub will officially re-open on Friday August 25 at 12pm.
