Furness motorists may be to find cheaper petrol in the area thanks to a new fuel finder scheme.
Last year MP Simon Fell worked with local residents after providing evidence to the CMA (Competitions and Markets Authority) of a massive difference between in fuel prices in both Barrow and Ulverston.
After looking into potential profit gouging in Furness back in March 2022, the MP provided evidence with one being a 39.2p differential between diesel at Morrisons, Barrow at 156.7p per litre and the Shell garage, Barrow, at 195.9p per litre.
In his letter to the authority, the MP highlighted Barrow and Furness' unique geography with his constituents potentially left more exposed to being charged a premium rate as there is 'not a great deal of choice.'
He added that discovering the 39.2p differential seemed like 'little more than profiteering.'
Mr Fell said: "I wouldn’t expect the CMA to make special consideration for Furness, but it should look very closely at the issue of relative geographic isolation and the impact of that on competitive pricing at the pump.
"One of the reasons I have been so active in passing on local residents’ concerns and showing the unfair and uncompetitive price differences between stations in Ulverston and Barrow is to demonstrate that the market isn’t working and that supermarkets appear to be penalising Furness residents by looking at local pricing rather than the wider market."
The MP is now urging people to check out the CMA's recommondations and in particular its new fuel finder scheme to help drivers get more competitive prices.
The scheme enables drivers access to live, station-by-station fuel prices on their phones or satnavs to help them see more competitive prices and thus revitalise competition in the retail road fuel market.
Speaking about the matter on July 13 on his Facebook page, Mr Fell added: "These are welcome and helpful steps, but there’s still lots more to do. I’m pushing Ministers to implement them, and to keep the market under constant review."
