A BRAVE mum who saved four children from a home following a major fire is appealing to those affected by the blaze to get in touch.

More than a dozen properties were evacuated on Thursday evening (June 22) after firefighters battled a major blaze in Salthouse Road, Barrow.

Crews from across Cumbria were called to the incident which affected multiple properties at the intersection of Salthouse Road and Marsh Street, several of which have since been deemed ‘uninhabitable’.

Shipyard worker Carolanne McInally rescued four children from one of the affected properties, carrying them to safety and warning other residents about the fire.

Days after the blaze, Carolanne wants to help the people affected by the fire – some of which have been left without a home.

She said: “They have lost absolutely everything because of this fire. As a human being if I was in their shoes I would ask for help if I could.

“Someone said there was a family of nine living in one of these homes – it must be so hard for them.

“They may have lost everything but they have our support.”

With the help of the community, Carolanne plans on giving donations to those affected by the fire and wants those in need to get in touch.

The 34-year-old said: “With the state of the world at the moment, not everybody can afford to give money but if people could give clothing, toys, books or things, I’m sure that would mean just as much. They’ve lost everything in their homes.

“I’ve had a few people message me asking if anyone needs anything to get in touch. If we can find out what people need, we can raise money or collect items. I can start a fundraiser at BAE for them.

“We just want to help how we can.

“If they prefer we can set up a group where we can help them anonymously. As a community, we want to help.”

As of Thursday afternoon, fire crews were still on the scene to dampen down and prevent a re-ignition.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue said that investigations, dampening, and structural reviews are expected to continue.

Fire investigators have been unable to gain access due to the structural integrity of several of the properties.
