THE four-star Inn on the Lake hotel in Glenridding has opened its new 75m lakeside terrace - with seating available for over 90 guests.

The hotel is part of Lake District Hotels Ltd, which closed its previous terrace at the beginning of 2023. It now has a new al-fresco dining area.

Over the course of four months, the existing land was excavated and transformed into a new 75m long terrace equipped with slate walls and intricate stonework detail as well as a wooden pergola that frames guests’ views of Ullswater built by Cumbrian groundwork firm O’Malley.

The slate walls break up the terrace into various seating areas, with some wall complexes incorporating seating into the design.

All slate was sourced from Honister Slate Mine, including over 90 tonnes of walling stone and 200 linear metres of coping stones.

The hotel has invested in a selection of pots, plants and shrubbery to add some extra warmth and colour to the space. Automated electric doors have been integrated into the building allowing guests to exit from the bar onto the new outdoor space which is wheelchair accessible.

“We are so pleased with the finished result. The stunning new terrace, coupled with its breath-taking views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells, really does make the Inn on the Lake an unrivalled setting for weddings” said Gary Wilson, general manager of the Inn on the Lake.

The lakeshore hotel offers four different entrances onto the terrace, one from the Lake View Restaurant, one from the private hire Glenridding Suite, another from the bar area and a final door extending out from the Orangery.
