If good food and fine dining is your passion, visit The Pentonbridge Inn, Carlisle.

Cumbria boasts 13 Michelin stars across 11 restaurants, the most of any county outside London.

One of the newest places to be awarded a Michelin star is The Pentonbridge Inn in the village of Penton, north of Carlisle.

Three Cumbrian restaurants received their first star in 2023, The Pentonbridge Inn, The Samling at Ambleside, and Heft at High Newton, near Cartmel.

The Pentonbridge reopened in 2017 and earned praise from writer, broadcaster Grace Dent on her visit last year who said the £115-a-head, eight-course meal was "cooking...Britain should be proud of".

The inn offers rooms so you can enjoy the extensive wine list as part of your stay.

If you’re a fan of walking and good views Helm Crag in Grasmere is a perfect place for you.

It was recently hailed one of the 10 most Instagram-worthy routes in the county.

Start in the heart of Grasmere – which is lovely to visit itself or grab a bite to eat before you set off- there is also a lesser known but quieter route from Helmside.

It's well worth it for the summit where you'll find the well-known rock formation known as The Lion and the Lamb, and the Howitzer, the true summit of Helm Crag, which offers some of the finest views in the Lakes.

If you fancy spending a day on the water, Fell Foot at Windermere is one of the best places to head.

You’re spoilt for choice in the Lake District, but Fell Foot is a National Trust property with a wide range of outdoor learning and adventure programmes.

Choose from guided canoe heritage tours; wild swimming, with courses for both beginners and intermediate swimmers; hire rowboats, kayaks or paddleboards, or bring your own.

With great views of the largest lake in England, Fell Foot is dog friendly and has a café for refreshments.

If you’re looking for an educational activity, there is a Roman exhibition on in Whitehaven.

Romans: "Are We There Yet?" at The Beacon Museum, is a family-friendly, interactive exhibition.

Visit the Harbour Gallery to find out what impact the Romans had on Cumbria.

Create a mosaic, hear Roman tales at the Roundhouse, dress-up and complete a Roman-themed trail that explores the museum.

The May half-term week has extra activities including Roman oil lamp and mosaic tile making.

The Beacon is hosting Verrocchio’s Tobias and the Angel as part of the National Gallery’s Masterpiece tour until June 4.
