ELECTIONS to a brand-new council centred on the town of Barrow are set to take place on Thursday, May 4.

A total of 43 candidates are to compete across the 11 wards that will make up Barrow Parish Council. 

Two councillors are to be chosen to represent most of the wards. Barrow Island is the exception and will only have one councillor.

Voting for those registered is to take place between 7am and 10pm. It is now too late to register.

Poll cards should now have been sent to residents giving further details about the election, including where to go to vote.

Voters must show photo ID at polling stations on May 4.

Acceptable forms of photo ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport, a UK or EEA driver's licence, and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

Those without acceptable ID can apply for a voter authority certificate, for free, at gov.uk/applyforphotoidtovote with the deadline being 5pm on April 25.

Paper forms are available from council offices in Barrow, Kendal and Penrith.

Those applying to vote by post do not require photo ID.
