EASTER Saturday brought another crisis on the Lake District fells as a mountain rescue team, receiving helicopter assistance, took their second emergency call of a sunny bank holiday weekend.
At just after 3pm on Saturday afternoon, 12 Coniston Mountain Rescue Team volunteers responded to a call from Cumbria Police to assist a man who had slipped and fallen at Levers Hawse, at the head of the Coppermines Valley to the northwest of Coniston.
The man was unable to bear weight on his ankle, having broken his leg, and so the ever-reliable team despatched two Land Rovers to Levers Water dam, with the rescuers intending to walk up to the stricken walker from there.

However, an air ambulance (Helimed 08) had also been called from Blackpool, and landed at the scene before the mountain rescue team could get there.
There was enough manpower around the casualty (including a team member on a walk) to carry him to the helicopter for evacuation, so the team was stood down, an hour and 34 minutes after responding to the call.
