THE National Trust put out an appeal to members of the public visiting a nature reserve over the weekend.

The trust has put fencing around Roanhead Pool at Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve to protect its rare natterjack toads from outside influence while they are breeding.

A spokesperson from the trust said: "If you are visiting over the Easter weekend, please note that the fencing to protect our natterjack toads is now erected around Roanhead Pool.

"Please do not enter the pool whilst the fencing is up to give our rare residents every chance of breeding success."

According to the Wildlife Trust, the natterjack toad is found at just a few coast locations, preferring warm shallow pools on sand dunes, heaths and marshes.

They are protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, and are considered a priority species under the UK post-2010 Biodiversity Framework.

They are smaller than the common toad and breed in only a handful of places in England and Scotland.
