A BARROW teenager has been sentenced after pleading guilty to possessing an offensive weapon.

Jack Galbraith, 19, of Salthouse Road, admitted having a baseball bat in a public place when he appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court.

The incident took place on March 3, 2023, on School Street in Barrow.

He has been sentenced to 12 weeks in a young offender institution suspended for 12 months.

Magistrates said the offence was 'so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified.'

Court documents said the offence was committed while he was subject to a community order.

The court decided to suspend the sentence due to a 'realistic prospect of rehabilitation within the community, partial recent compliance with Probation and attending Thinking Skills is paramount to rehabilitation'.

He must attend the Thinking Skills Programme and the baseball bat is to be forfeited and destroyed.

He must abstain from consuming any alcohol for 60 days up until May 20, 2023.

He was also told to pay £85 court costs.
