TRANSPORT police have been commended for their professionalism after a man died following an incident on the railway tracks.

Emergency services were called to a serious incident in Askam on March 2 which led to major disruption on the rail network.

Officers were dispatched to the line in Askam at 7.14am following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

British Transport Police later confirmed that a man had died following an incident on railway tracks.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Paramedics also attended however sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to establish the full circumstances behind their death.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Weeks on since these tragic set of events, British Transport Police have been commended by Cumbria Police for their professionalism.

Mike Roberts, NW Chaplain to BTP & Railway, said Cumbria Police sent a letter to the transport police chief praising the force for their good work.

He said: “Recently the BTP Lancashire team attended a tragic fatality in Cumbria. Following a letter to the BTP chief from Cumbria Police, the team, led by PS Phillips, [BTP] were commended for their professionalism.

“So positive to mark good work in any organisation.”

Following the man’s tragic death, heartfelt tributes were sent to his family and loved ones.

Sharon Conlong said: “Thoughts with his family and friends.”

Liz Leech said: “Very sad news. RIP to the poor gentleman and thoughts and condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Susan Doak said: “Thoughts with the family involved so sad RIP.”

Craig Rothery said: “RIP to whoever concerned at this sad time.”

Maz Goodwin said: “Horrendous. Sad thing to happen - my heart breaks with you.”
