LOCAL women have been recognised for their triumphs in various professional fields as part of International Women's Day.

The day celebrates women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements and pushes for rights progress.

The Mail has selected South Cumbria's most successful women, from football players to CEOs; these women have been honoured for their achievements.

Georgia Stanway

24-year old Georgia Stanway, who grew up in Askam, played a crucial role in steering England to European Championship success.

The cup win has raised a huge wave of support and pride in South Cumbria.

The young football player is currently playing for Frauen-Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and England national team.

Margaret Burrow

Margaret Burrow is the honorary CEO of Barrow District Disability Association (BDDA).

The 82-year-old was raised on Barrow Island with her four sisters and four brothers and has lived in Barrow all her life.

Over the years Margaret has helped thousands of local people overcome their restrictions or difficulties and her outstanding contribution to charity work was recognised in 2002 when she was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen.

Emma Walsmley

The Barrow-born woman is the Chief Executive Officer at GlaxoSmithKline and has been made a dame for services to the pharmaceutical industry and business, after heading the company for three years.

Emma Walsmley is a mum of four and took on the job at GSK in March 2017.

The move, which put the 51-year-old at the steering wheel of the wider £8 billion empire, made her one of the most powerful women in the FTSE 100.

Jayne Moorby

Jayne Moorby is the Head of Marketing at the Oxley Group, an advanced manufacturer of LED lighting and electronic components based in Ulverston, which sells to 34 countries across the globe.

Sam Plum

Sam Plum is the Chief Executive who will lead the new Westmorland and Furness Council.

Mrs Plum has 25 years of local government experience and has worked for authorities including Rossendale Borough Council, Pendle Borough Council and Bradford City Council.

She has worked at a senior corporate leadership level for the past seven years including the last three years as Chief Executive at Barrow Borough Council.
