Channel 4 came to Cumbria for their series on power stations across the country.
Guy Martin, TT motorcyclist and TV presenter, visited the Sellafield site back in September 2022, for the final episode of the Channel 4 series Guy Martin’s Great British Power Trip, which aired on Sunday (February 26).
In this three-part series, Guy travels the country visiting power stations and energy infrastructure to understand more about the past, present, and future of energy production in the UK.
The episode with Sellafield focuses on the central role of the site in the development of Britain’s nuclear power industry, examines how Sellafield is still supporting nuclear station to keep the lights on, and explains the focus of decommissioning and waste management operations today.
During his time at Sellafield, Guy visited the Calder Hall control room, the WAGR box store, the Sellafield railway system, and the fuel handling plant.
He was given the opportunity to drive an electric locomotive and to handle AGR fuel casings remotely using a master-slave manipulator.
Reflecting on his visit, Guy said: "What an eye-opening day I've had, I can't believe an entire industry started right here – the bedrock of nuclear energy and the nuclear industry.
"Sellafield Ltd is doing an amazing job.
“Growing up in the east of the country, some of the things we heard about Sellafield weren't great, but now I've come here I can see everything is covered.
“What a place! Safe as houses!"
All episodes are available to stream on All 4.
