ALMOST 200 dogs had their lives transformed in 2022 thanks to Dogs Trust Cumbria and their team of volunteer foster carers.

With no traditional rehoming centre in Cumbria, Dogs Trust launched its unique approach to finding dogs new homes in the area in January 2022, rehoming dogs direct from foster homes in the county.

Within Cumbria, Dogs Trust now has 18 Home from Home foster carers who volunteer their time by providing a temporary home for dogs being cared for by the charity until they find their forever families.

This small but mighty team achieved great success in 2022 by finding loving new homes for 199 rescue dogs.

Many of the dogs rehomed were older age pooches – 57 were aged eight and over with five aged 14 and over.

The oldest perfect pooch to find a new home was 17-year-old terrier Hutch.

The top three most popular breeds finding homes were terriers (39), sighthounds (29) and collies (26).

Annabel Robinson, Home from Home co-ordinator, said: “Rehoming 199 dogs last year was totally beyond our expectations and we couldn’t be more delighted about it.

“It’s brilliant that the foster scheme has really taken off within Cumbria allowing us to give all these wonderful dogs the chance of a lifetime where they go into a home temporarily, until we find them a forever one.

“Rehoming all of these dogs in need would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of our volunteer foster carers who do such an amazing job. We cannot thank them enough. We are always on the lookout for more foster carers as we want to help as many dogs as we can so we would love to hear from anyone who may be interested in fostering or rehoming local to us.”

While dogs are in foster care, all expenses are covered by the charity, and fosters receive support from the Dogs Trust Home from Home team.
