AN APPLICATION to establish if prior approval is required for the installation of a new 5G mast has been submitted to Barrow Borough Council.
CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd wants to set up the 15m pole with street cabinets opposite 163 Abbey Road in Barrow, close to the junction with Park Drive.
A planning document prepared by Dot Surveying says the development – for mobile network Three – requires a 'well-considered balance between the need to extend practical coverage with that of increasing risk of visual intrusion'.

The document describes the proposal as the 'best available compromise'.
"The design of the proposed antenna and ground-based cabinets is considered to be the least visually intrusive option available," it says.
"Whilst it is accepted that there will be a localised visual increase through the installation of additional apparatus, it is considered that this will not overly detract from the character of the existing streetscape."
