AN APPLICATION to replace the high ropes course and climbing wall at an outdoor education centre in the Lake District has been given the green light by the national park authority.

Documents said that, through regular inspection, the life of the structure at Brathay Hall, near Ambleside, had been extended 'several times'.

A planning statement submitted by Damson Consultancy Ltd on behalf of applicant the Brathay Trust said, however, that the most recent report from inspection firm Capstone had identified a 'number of elements' that meant it was 'time to consider replacement rather than continued repair'.

"The present structure is treated timber poles with diameters up to 400mm with a combination of ropes, wires and steel support structures including some plastic elements to the course features," said the statement.

"The proposals are to replace the timber support structure with a galvanised-steel, circular-column structure coated in a dark-brown paint colour to reflect the appearance of timber.

"The wires and ropes and timber climbing wall are similar to the present structure."
