A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after a teenager was hospitalised in an alleged waterside assault.

Police are now asking for witnesses or anyone who has more information to come forward after the early morning incident, which occured by the side of the pond behind Barrow Travelodge and resulted in a 17-year-old receiving minor injuries.

Police were called at 5.30am on Monday morning to the incident near Phoenix Road.

It resulted in the closure of a path between Walney Road and Phoenix Road which runs alongside the water.

An eyewitness told The Mail: "A policeman is guarding the entrance to the park opposite the entrance to Asda. Police tape across too."

Another said: "There is a police cordon off Walney Road to Phoenix Road in Barrow and all taped off with officers on scene guard."

The path, which is located across the road from the Asda junction off Walney Road and leads through to Phoenix Road, was cordoned off by police and manned by officers until early afternoon on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police said: "A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH assault.

"The incident was reported to police at 5:30am this morning. The reported incident occurred on Phoenix Road, Barrow, by the pond.

"A local 17-year-old male suffered a minor injury. He attended hospital for medical attention. He discharged himself.

"A 26-year-old man received a minor injury. He attended hospital and has since been discharged.

"A cordon was in place at the location whilst police inquiries were conducted. It has since been removed.

"Anyone with information relating the incident is asked to contact police via www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it. You can also call 101.
