PUNTERS have congratulated a well-run boozer after it was named among the best in the country in an award ceremony.

Roa Island Boating Club of the West Pennines region was among 14 clubs in the country to win the regional Club of the Year competition, awarded by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

It follows the club's successes in the adjacent Furness and Cumbria awards earlier in the year.

Locals and those from further afield alike have been bestowing their congratulations and

Terry Mckenna said: "There is nowhere better on a sunny day. Tide in, beer in hand, love it."

Eric Salton said: "It's a belter. Good food, good staff and great views. Well done."

Paul Bibby, who runs the club with his wife Lorraine, expressed his surprise at the accolade.

He told The Mail he was 'amazed' to find out that they had won the award, and put it down to the care with which they brew their beers.

Yvonne Woodend said: "Congratulations to you both - well deserved."

Katie McGuire said: "Well done you two! My favourite pub in the world."

Greta McGowan said: "Well done both. Fabulous food and lovely staff. Love it."

Paul Cook said: "Well deserved to wonderful staff."

Bridie Phillips said: "Wow! Well done Paul and Lorraine, I didn't realise you ran it. Will definitely have to pop in next time I'm in Barrow."

Now, the 14 regional finalists will now have a chance to compete for the National Club of the Year crown, one of the highest accolades afforded to Britain’s clubs.

The competition has been on hold over the last two years due to Covid restrictions and was last won by Cheltenham Motor Club in 2019, which also won the award in 2013 and 2017.

The regional announcement came as CAMRA urges the Government to address the burgeoning energy crisis and commit to urgent support to help the nation’s pubs and clubs.
