TRANSPORT police have confirmed that a person has sadly died after being hit by a train.
Officers do not yet know who the person is and are working to identify the casualty.
The incident, at Hest Bank, near Carnforth, was reported on Tuesday afternoon after reports were made of a casualty on the track.
Officers attended alongside paramedics and the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
British Transport Police issued the following statement: "Officers were called to the line in Hest Bank at 1.42pm on October 4 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are working to identify the person and inform their family. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
Trains have been cancelled from Lancaster on the Carlisle and Barrow lines.
Northern, which runs the route between Barrow and Lancaster, has said that train services running through these stations will be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.
Carnforth, Silverdale, Arnside, Grange-Over-Sands, Kents Bank, Cark, Ulverston, Dalton and Roose will not be served.
It has said that a replacement bus service will be in operation between Barrow, Lancaster and Carnforth in both directions.
Currently, services between Oxenholme and Windermere have not been affected.
A statement from Avanti West Coast, which runs services between Lancaster and Carlisle, reads: "There are delays of up to 60 minutes and some cancellations on Avanti West Coast and Transpennine Express between Lancaster and Carlisle, Northern service between Lancaster and Oxenholme Lake District and between Lancaster and Carnforth due to emergency services dealing with an earlier incident."
