A TEEN who stabbed a schoolmate with a kitchen knife after threatening to ‘kill him’ has been sentenced to three years in custody.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Preston Crown Court yesterday after previously admitting to charges of wounding and possessing a blade on school premises.

The defendant carried out the attack against a 15-year-old victim at Walney School on the morning of January 25.

The victim was airlifted to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool after suffering multiple stab wounds.

Preston Crown Court heard that the defendant stabbed the 15-year-old in the boys’ toilets and corridor area of the school which was recorded on CCTV.

A witness gave evidence to the court stating that immediately prior to the event, the defendant had told him his intentions to harm the victim and not to tell anyone.

He reportedly told a friend that he was ‘going to kill’ the victim.

The judge was told the attack was provoked by an incident which had occurred the previous night.

An altercation between the two teenagers spilled out from the bathroom onto a crowded corridor, the court heard, where the defendant was seen repeatedly lashing out with a knife.

Police said the defendant struck – or attempted to strike – the victim with nine blows but not all of them made contact. The victim responded with robust, but proportionate, force, the judge was told, and was unaware the defendant was using a knife.

After about 11 seconds, the defendant lost control of the knife and another student intervened by taking a firm grip of the defendant, the court heard.

The knife – which was a kitchen knife from the defendant’s home – was then handed into staff.

After the incident, the court heard the defendant immediately left the school and told a friend in an ‘animated way’ that he had stabbed another pupil and the friend encouraged him to surrender himself to authorities.

The defendant agreed to meet police where he was arrested, the court heard.

The victim was taken to Alder Hey Hospital where he was treated for a number of stab wound injuries to his buttock, scapula, spine, head and upper thigh.

Judge Robert Altham sentenced the defendant to three years in custody and was told he must serve at least 18 months.

Sentencing, Judge Altham said the defendant caused ‘extremely unpleasant injuries’ which caused the victim ‘extreme suffering’.
