HAIRY Biker Dave Myers has reminisced about his days as a makeup artist on Top of the Pops.

The Barrovian spoke about his experiences with dealing with celebrities during the Confidential Corner segment of the Hairy Bikers – Agony Uncles podcast.

The Podcast features Dave and his Hairy Bikers co-star Si King as they help members of the public deal with their dilemmas, assisted by ‘Posh Tash’ and ‘The Thin White Duke’.

One fan, given the alias of ‘Rose’, wrote to the Bikers looking for an excuse to not invite her brother, given the alias ‘Ricky’, to her 60th birthday party.

She told the pair that her brother had a ‘very minor chart hit in 1981’, reaching number 37 and dropping to 41 a week later.

She says that because of this, he still acts like he was ‘Simon Le Bon or Paul Young’, and within minutes of meeting him he will say ‘you will probably recognise me from Top of the Pops’, a programme which he performed on once.

Rose says her brother claims that his makeup for the show was done by none other than Dave Myers and tells people he is a ‘close personal friend’ of Noel Edmonds due to a stint as a call handler on Swap Shop.

Dave said it was quite possible that he did indeed do Ricky’s makeup, and divulged stories of his time on Top of the Pops.

He said: “I used to volunteer for the Christmas and Christmas eve ones, and they were good parties actually.

“There was that much glitter going around we all ended up with nose bleeds, and it was glitter it wasn’t anything nefarious.

“When you blew your nose, it was just spangled - that’s show business!”

Jennifer Rush, singer of The Power of Love, would be a frequent visitor in Dave’s makeup seat.

“I used to make her up every week she was number one,” said Dave. “She was absolutely delightful.”

A trickier customer was Sir Elton John.

Dave said: “He wouldn’t take his hat off when I was making him up. I said it’s very hard to blend a foundation under a brim, Elton.

“I don’t know, there must have been something going on underneath his Stetson.

“Those were the days.”
