AN AMBITIOUS project to create an off-road trail to link the western shore of Windermere is the subject of an amendment plan.

The Southern Windermere Trail, when complete, will be 5633 metres long and will link The Swan Hotel Newby Bridge to YMCA Lakeside.

The project as a whole was approved in 2021 but the current application seeks to amend one 300-metre stretch of the trail to reduce the gradient, in order for it to gain a 'routes for all' designation, rather than the already consented 'routes for many'.

The planning statement says: "The aim of the whole project is to provide visitors a route that is predominately a traffic-free route to link the key visitor destinations in the Southern Windermere Basin.

"The alignment corridor for the trail will be following the lakeshore where practically possible but also head away from the lake to link key local visitor destinations.

"The trail will be formed of a mixture of new build sections or upgrades to existing public rights of way, private paths, and tracks."

The trail is being developed by the Lake District National Park Authority in consultation with the Parish Councils, land owners, and stakeholders.
