A COUNCIL has warned residents and visitors to be aware before taking a dip in the water after sightings of blue-green algae were confirmed.
The algae is confirmed to have been spotted in Windermere, Coniston Water and Killington.
South Lakeland District Council are telling residents and tourists to stay safe by checking the Environment Agency's North West map before they and their pets take a dip in the water.
If you spot any other sightings of the algae call the Environment Agency hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
Blue-Green Algae is a naturally occurring environmental phenomenon which becomes more likely during periods of warm, dry weather.
Its growth is exacerbated by nutrient pollution which contributes to the formation of blooms in the right conditions.
Blue-Green Algae poses a small risk to human health if a person comes into direct contact with it. It can also be a risk to animals such as dogs who may swim in or drink from affected water.
