A HORSE suffered serious injuries and escaped onto the busy A590 after a crash led to a boundary wall collapsing.
Police have launched an investigation following the fail-to-stop collision on Pennington Lane in Ulverston.
Boue, a therapy horse at South Lakes Horsemanship, was eventually tracked down in Urswick but had suffered serious injuries - believed to have happened when the wall fell on him.
Jane Armstrong Lancaster, a horse trainer for South Lakes Horsemanship, is appealing for any witnesses.
“The vet said they must have hit the horse too as he damaged his teeth, and his face has had to be stitched up," she said.
"He had impact injury which meant it had been caused by being hit according to the vet. Accidents happen but they didn’t stop or say they knocked the wall down.
“It is four meters of wall that has come down. It is very big and thick it isn’t just a normal dry-stone wall - it is actually cemented so someone has had to have hit it with great force.
“It’s very obvious whose wall it was and that there was a horse in there and he escaped and crossed the A590. He is very lucky to be alive and he made his way to Urswick."
Charlie Hogan, who part owns Boue, said she was very grateful to the Urswick community.
She said: “The Urswick community as well as some local farmers were absolutely fabulous in helping locate and retrieve Boue and for that I’m extremely grateful.”
Boue is used for 20 hours a week with disabled riders and people with mental health problems.
Jane said she was worried the damaged he has suffered will affect him.
She said: “He is such a calm horse who loves working with people so I’m just worried this may affect him.
“He is doing well but he is just stiff and might need surgery on his teeth. The vets have already stitched all his face up and he has cuts all over him.
“He has two lots of sedation required with painkillers after treatment - he’s very sore so needs to be exercised gently but regularly to stop him ceasing up.”
Police said it happened on May 30 at approximately 8:45pm.
